Storyline
In the middle of the night, Sarah discovers the lifeless body of her teenage son, Noah, who died from a pulmonary embolism. This tragic moment becomes the anchor point of an intimate narrative about resilience.

Through everyday gestures, therapy sessions, and memories, real or imagined, Sarah learns to navigate his absence. In a recurring dream, she meets Noah in a forest, a fragile exchange, suspended between memory and imagination. The hum of a fridge in the woods, a Rubik’s cube, a conversation left unfinished: sensory fragments that trace the contours of her grief.

How to Lose a Son explores the human capacity to survive the absurdity of loss. The film embraces silence, routine, and the slow rhythm of mourning, gradually revealing the enduring bond between a mother and her son.

Told through a minimalist, sensory lens, How to Lose a Son offers a quiet meditation on grief, memory, and the act of rebuilding. Avoiding grandiosity, it favours an emotional experience rooted in a delicate interplay of reality and dream.

Description
With an intelligent gaze, Sarah exudes calm and confidence, and yet she carries a quiet violence within her. Often without having to name things, her eyes speak for themselves. Her grief does not crush her; it moves through her quietly, with unexpected surges. She refuses to be defined by this event, and despite the pain, she remains a complex woman, at times funny, at times distant, but always entirely herself. Despite the loss of their child, she and her husband, Peter, continue to share a profound bond.
