Tom is the intern to a struggling internet content creator - Mark. He'll do just about anything to make a buck. He's awkward but holds confidence that seems out of place.

This character is an anchor. They are practicing Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) principles, meaning they are deeply observant, patient, and able to look past the child's anger to the fear underneath. They hold boundaries firmly but with immense compassion. They are not looking to "fix" the problem immediately but rather to "hold" the child's emotions, providing a safe harbor. The actor must convey unconditional love, presence, and a sense of unshakable commitment. Vocal & Performance Notes: Calm, grounded, unhurried — this is the emotional anchor of every scene, so pacing should never rush even when the child escalates. Warm and patient but not soft or permissive; she holds boundaries with authority delivered through steadiness, not sternness. Body language remains present, with steady eye contact. Casting Sensitivities: Should read as relatable and real rather than polished/commercial No clinical or therapist affect — she is a parent using these tools at home, not a professional in a session.

The Child is currently battling a severe, entrenched eating disorder. They are trapped in a cycle of fear, anxiety, and distorted body image. Across the six scenarios he negotiates, deflects, and questions food (portion size, ingredients, plate size, timing) as a way of managing a deeper fear — of weight gain, of losing control, of being judged or rejected. Underneath both is a frightened kid who softens into real vulnerability and small moments of letting the parent in. Each scenario should land in a small act of connection (a bite taken, a hand held, staying in the room). Vocal & Performance Notes: Needs to move credibly between guarded/defensive, cornered anger, and shattered vulnerability. Should sound raw and a little frayed at the edges, not polished or “acted.” The exhaustion of the disorder should be audible, not just stated. Comfortable with quiet, held silences as well as loud angry moments. Casting Sensitivities: This is a minor performing emotionally demanding material about a child's mental health. Eating disorders affect people of every body type — we do not seek a young actor who visibly appears underweight. We seek a young actor who can take direction on subtlety and de-escalation, not only big emotional swings — several beats hinge on a quiet admission rather than an outburst.

A meek teen finally being invited to the ‘big’ parties, in the thrill and excitement of finally feeling seen by a special someone. This is the night they finally start to open up.

Carmen is an aspiring writer and life-long city girl. She’s polite, thoughtful, and self-assured. She’s empathetic to a fault and often hides her true feelings until she’s had time to fully process them. Carmen has agreed to accompany her boyfriend home for his father’s funeral. Carmen has never felt particularly welcome in their home, but loves Jesse enough to be there for his sake. *This role is intended for a trans performer.*

Jesse is a simple guy from a small town family, now enjoying his life in the city. Though he was always popular in school, he has recently found a sort of freedom in his life with his girlfriend and her friends. He’s chill, charismatic, and light-hearted. The passing of his father weighs heavy on Jesse, as he finds himself conflicted between grief and his complicated feelings about his overbearing father. Jesse has asked Carmen (his gf) to accompany him home for his father’s funeral, knowing it will stir up drama but hoping everyone will be too distracted to really notice. He finds comfort in Carmen he knows he won’t find in his own family.

Tammy is a loving mother, a hard worker, and a peacemaker. She has spent the majority of her life in the same town, and has become very protective of her family and friends. Her children, Jesse & Lex, and her husband Richard are her whole life. After her kids moved out, and now Richard passing, Tammy feels an intense loneliness and a certain loss of self. Tammy is less than happy to see Carmen (her son's trans gf) on her doorstep the evening before her husband’s funeral. While she herself does not resent Carmen, she feels a duty to honour her late husband’s disdain, as well as a protectiveness over her son.

Arab. Written as male but very open to any gender. The Principal of a school grades kindergarten to 12. Knowledgeable and forgiving, they are also stern when needed to be. In their office, they lecture two conflicting grade 7 students about the lessons of Convivencia from 12th century Andalusian Spain, to solve their modern day issues of race, culture and ethnic differences.

Black Caribbean. From Toronto, an academically intelligent grade 7 student that is called to the principal’s office for fighting with PETER at lunch. She is strong in her convictions, but not completely innocent. She has a troubled past of being bullied because of her ethnic background. Her emotional swings are fast but authentic, as she becomes increasingly open to the ideas that principal USTAD offers.

Caucasian. Originally from Sudbury, a grade 7 student with dyslexia that is called to the principal’s office for fighting with AIDA at lunch. He is street smart and curious about everything, and loves reading Lord Of The Rings, even with its challenges as a dyslexic. He cannot understand why AIDA’s food smells differently, and tries to explain to principal USTAD how he didn’t start the fight with AIDA.

A devout Christian during 12th century Andalusian Spain, she sells eggs at the market where she gets into an argument about fraud with a local FISHMONGER. Aggressive and manipulative, she uses a glass bowl to magnify her eggs and cheat customers, standing her ground regardless. Persuaded to tolerate her market stall neighbour by IBN RUSHD, she eventually becomes open to the idea of Convivencia, to share the market space fairly. *Not neccessary, but can indicate if able to speak Spanish or Arabic.
